The truth of the matter is that during the course of a 4,000 mile road trip some days are just driving from Point A to Point B. Day 12 was one of those days.
We left Spokane late morning bound for Glacier National Park. That meant taking the 2 north through Idaho and into Montana. Which also meant we passed through Sand Point, Idaho where my brother lived for a couple of years.
We made it to Sand Point around lunchtime and the city was packed. Traffic through the main strip, people walking around everywhere - it was a Saturday, but there were still a lot more popular than I had expected. Per my brother's recommendaton, we stopped at "the Mexican place" Joel's for a taco lunch which was quite good before stopping at the renovated Safeway for supplies. I hadn't been to town in five years, but it was remarkable how much growth there has been. New office buildings (mostly empty), a new Holiday Inn Express, renovatd Wal-Mart, and so on.
We then went north through Bonners Ferry where we picked up a phenomenal smoothie and 'strawberry cream pie' at a gas station. Don't know the name, but it has a sign for the "City's Best Smoothies" if you ever find yourself passing through.
We made it to Glacier around 6pm and went to the Apgar Campground, the first inside the park with vacancy (two free sites out of their 250 or so). We pitched the tent among the forest of RVs and had a delicous beans and chicken dinner - our best camp dinner thus far - and waited for the sun to set. And waited. And waited. Around 9:45pm we called it a night but there was still light until 10:30pm.
Our plan is to cross the Going-to-the-Sun Road tomorrow, exploring Glacier and camping on the east side of the park. Then it's southerly through Roosevelt Gate to Yellowstone.
